Procrastination In College Students And Its Effects - Free Essay Example
Procrastination in College Students and Its Effects Do you ever find yourself waiting until the last minute to complete assignments? If you do, you are not alone. Many college students have a tendency to procrastinate on assignments. For most, procrastination can have negative consequences and can be harmful to their academic success, but for some procrastination is intentional and can have positive outcomes. Researchers are doing studies to define the difference between passive procrastination and active procrastination and the consequences or benefits they have on college students. The most common form of procrastination is called passive procrastination. Passive procrastinators are traditional procrastinators who postpone their tasks until the last minute because of an inability to make the decision to act in a timely manner (Choi and Moran 196). There are many negative internal consequences that can arise from this type of procrastination that may include regret, irritation, despair, and self-blame, as well as external consequences that can include impaired academic and work progress, lost opportunities, and strained relationships (Haycock et al. 317). The negative consequences procrastination can have on college students could lead to poor grade point averages and failure to complete courses. Throughout the years researchers have been studying these effects on college students and their inability to complete assignments in a timely manner. In 2007, it was estimated that 75% of college students procrastinated, with 50% of them saying they thought it may be a problem because they procrastinate constantly (Burka Yuen 6). A study done at one university on academic procrastination showed that as many as 50% of the participants procrastinated on assignments (Haycock et al. 317). Some college students find it easier to delay working on assignments to do more pleasurable activities which then causes them to rush to meet deadlines and often results in undesirable grades and poor self-esteem. In 1997, Dianne Tice and Roy Baumeister, both professors of psychology, published one of the first studies of the nature of procrastination in Psychological Science (Jaffe, par. 8). They tracked college students level of procrastination by looking at their academic performance, stress levels, and overall health during the semester. Tice and Baumeister (1997) reported that university students who rated high on procrastination not only received low grades but also reported a high level of stress along with poor self-rated health (Chu and Choi 246). Tice later teamed up with Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology, to further study the how procrastination can have negative consequences. In 2000, Tice and Ferrari published their conclusions in the Journal of Research in Personality, finding that procrastinators tend to undermine their own best efforts (Jaffe, par. 10). These studies are consistent in concluding the negative effects procrastination can have on college students but do no t tell us why college students procrastinate. For some college students, they have an underlying fear of failure, while for others itrs a fear of success. According to Burka and Yuen, As long as you procrastinate, you never have to confront the real limits of your ability, whatever those limits are (22). Some college students use procrastination as a way to avoid the humiliation and judgement of failing (Burka Yuen, 22). The fear that their success will raise other peoples expectations of them is another reason college students procrastinate (Novotney 2). Procrastinating because of the fear of failure can affect oners ability to reach their full potential and success in the future. For those that have a fear of success, they want to do well but unconscious worries keep them from succeeding and results in procrastination (Burka Yuen 23). These fears are often not noticed by college students until they start to negatively affect their grades. Studies have shown that negative outcomes are more likely with passive procrastination, but newer studies are showing that it is possible to procrastinate and achieve positive outcomes. In 2005, Angela Hsin Chun Chu and Jin Nam Choi provided an alternative perspective and demonstrated that not all procrastination behaviors are harmful or are precursors of negative consequences (Choi and Moran 195). Chu and Choi believe that, Active procrastinators make intentional decisions to procrastinate, using their strong motivation under time pressure, and they are able to complete tasks before deadlines and achieve satisfactory outcomes (Choi and Moran 196). During their study of a group of 230 undergraduates from three Canadian universities, they found that active procrastinators demonstrated time perceptions, attitudes, coping styles, and academic performance that were nearly identical to (and in some cases even better than) those of non-procrastinators (Choi and Moran 196). An active procra stinator might, for example, start a project the day itrs due because they feel they will be able to focus better, meet expectations, and still receive a satisfactory grade. By approaching procrastination as an active behavior, scholars could highlight beneficial outcomes for students who intentionally delayed academics (Hensley 1). Although further research is needed to verify the benefits of active procrastination, researchers are finding that there can be positive outcomes of procrastination. Active procrastinators have the benefit of being able to organize their time and are self-motivated, which can drive them towards their goals and ability to achieve their desired outcome (Choi and Moran 197). Survey-based studies of active procrastination have included undergraduates of all academic levels and a range of ethnic backgrounds (Hensley 1). Active procrastination is an observable behavioral characteristic that encompasses a personrs affective preference for time pressure, cognitive decision to procrastinate, behavioral capacity to meet deadlines, and ability to achieve satisfactory outcomes (Choi Moran 196). Using these four characterizations, Chu and Choi (2005) were able to determine whether a person is a passive procrastinator or an active procrastinator. Choi and doctoral student Sarah V. Moran have taken Chu and Choirs study and expanded on the four dimensions of characteristics and included comparing them with other general personality characteristics (Choi Moran 197). By expanding the scale from the 12-item measure that Chu and Choi (2005) used to a 40-item measure, they were able to take into account various cognitive, affective, and behavioral mechanisms to improve their study (Choi and Moran 200). During their expanded study of active procrastination Choi and Moran were able to confirm the findings from Chu and Choirs study in 2005. There is still more research to be done to determine if active procrastination is directly related to high academic performance as it is connected to higher grade point averages (Hensley 2). A lot of college students procrastinate when it comes to completing their assignments. Most college students procrastinate because they find other activities to be more pleasurable, but studies show that some college students do it because they feel they can manage their time and focus better. Passive procrastinators are more likely to receive poor grades, have lower self-esteem, and higher stress levels due to the pressure they put on themselves to complete tasks on time. While passive procrastinators tend to receive more negative outcomes, studies show that active procrastinators excel in their studies when under time pressure and focus better. Active procrastinators intentionally wait until the last minute to complete assignments and are still able to receive desirable outcomes. Work Cited Angela Hsin Chun, Chu and Choi, Jin Nam. The Effects Of Racial Discrimination On The Police Force
Abstract The beginning of The World Is Not Black and White explains the growth of each race and how it will affect the environment within the next 35 years. A surprisingly steep decline in the white population as well as the growth of Latinos is greatly anticipated. All this information was processed under the census projects and are some what accurate. When investigating any bias thoughts involved in the police force, two tests were set up, both from different perspectives. The media has handled the deaths of all races more often than usual and has lead to the conclusion that there is some sort of pattern (Sdler,2012). The pattern focuses on racial discrimination rather than actual violence. Data held by the US Department of Justice and Bureau of justice states that African American minorities are often associated with crimes. However, shootings have been recently reported which confirms the US Departments claims. Aside from all these facts, treatment towards different races seems to be the issue. Another position used to counter attack this situation is how an officer must mentally and physically prepare themselves when dealing with armed people. One must be ready for any outcome. It is only for your benefit to prepare yourself when confronted by a black individual especially after reading the numbers of their involvement in incarceration (Sdler,2012). You can express yourself in hip hop with little money and little resources. In addition, hip hop music has the greatest ability to spread a message. Hip Hop songs have more words than most other genres of music. That makes it easier to get a point across and to inform others. For example, I can make a rap song about racism and in that song I can show many ways of how racism isnt k. The message will be acknowledged tremendously because for one, rap music Is loved by many different races and two; the rhymes will be very catchy. HIP hop music emphasizes lyrics (the words).Since the songs dont have melody, the most important parts are the beat and the words. Hip hop artists play with words and rhymes in the middle of complex rhythms. The lyrics often talk about love, political issues, black history, or about the dangerous lifestyle of drugs and gang violence in the inner cities (gangster hip hop). What human issues form the subjects of the work Did you find any of them particularly well handled Essay Example
What human issues form the subjects of the work? Did you find any of them particularly well handled? Essay The Sporting Spirit encapsulates instincts, pride, appearances, nationalism, symbolism, social identity, and human penchants as core issues that foment the gravity of the essay; ââ¬Å"savageâ⬠instincts coagulate with nationalism and appearances to foster oneââ¬â¢s pride, symbolizing the proudness of being labelled by oneââ¬â¢s country ââ¬â American, British, Russian, or otherwise. Pride fosters greed, which disinters the need for war ââ¬â either literally or figuratively. Orwell conveys symbolic war in his essay, The Sporting Spirit, depicting sports as a means of a battle between spectators, between two nations. It is a game where you either lose or win; there is no alternative. ââ¬Å"Sport is frankly mimic warfare,â⬠George Orwell says. Orwell touches on many human issues as subjects, but focuses on differences of communities, spectators, and nations to elucidate his opinion, adding to his authenticity. In paragraph seven, Orwell differentiates between urban and rustic communities, and how they view sports. Sports provide escapism for people in urban societies ââ¬â big towns ââ¬â as a way to wander from their sedentary life. The diction of ââ¬Å"sedentaryâ⬠crafts this aura of idleness, which contrasts the theme of ââ¬Å"savageâ⬠spectators ââ¬â spectators who are ardent to win through violent ways. Orwell even describes those who believe games bring nations together as a modern cult. This cynical usage of ââ¬Å"cultâ⬠ââ¬â a group or a system of religious belief ââ¬â portrays the dark humour Orwell uses to subtly mock those views. Did you find any of them particularly well handled? specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The essayââ¬â¢s tone is didactic, conclusive, and the reader is enticed by Orwellââ¬â¢s sequence as he progresses from the commonplace views, to specific authoritative views and events that explicate the truthfulness of his view; the reader is to adopt Orwellââ¬â¢s views ââ¬â the opinionated writer. Orwell touches on human issues of stratification in the first two paragraphs. He divulges what many ââ¬Å"thinkingâ⬠people have kept clandestine for so long ââ¬â that sport breeds ill-will. Sport aggression is a common phenomenon nowadays; Orwell classifies teams as ââ¬Å"Dynamo,â⬠ââ¬Å"Russian,â⬠or ââ¬Å"British,â⬠causing the reader to deliberate the labels spectators use in order to identify with their team. The diction of Orwell ââ¬â ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ I am told by someone,â⬠and ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ someone else informs meâ⬠ââ¬â signify how his opinion is not confined to him alone, but rather that others share it as well. Social id entification is one of the key human issues conveyed in the essay. Orwell says that sports create fresh animosity on both sides. The diction of ââ¬Å"animosityâ⬠portrays the hate of spectators to one another as fervent dislike bred from the virtues and differences of one another. This is one of the human issues Orwell is able to convey sublimely. The dictum that sports create good-will between the nations is a great misnomer because it is sport that symbolizes the competitive nature of humans and their need for classification. Humans seek pride, and they love power and domination. That is why sport is war ââ¬â it is about the loss, as well as the gain. (What one gains, the other loses.) Spectators are able to surmise differences of races, countries, or political predilections as a group, and either boo the referee, or sing offensive songs that degrade the other team as well as their spectators to show their judgments. Orwell insinuates that competitiveness does not build character. At best, it betrays it. At worst, it corrupts it. It is not just the players who are corrupted; it is also the spectators. The imagery of a battlefield illustrate Orwellââ¬â¢s view of sport as a savage, violent activity where running, jumping, and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue. Good sportsmanship ââ¬â honesty, humility, imperturbableness, respect, and appreciation ââ¬â is non-existent to Orwell. Orwellââ¬â¢s insincere pathos delineates how sports are wrongfully understood by many. Orwell also touches, in my opinion, on chauvinism rather than patriotism. In sports, if a team loses, it is for a reason. Ignoring the reasons for loss, and recklessly blaming the referee or the conditions is a form of ignorance that is only shown by a chauvinist ââ¬â a person who believes that his country is the sole best county, obdurately. Orwell is able to craft the essay with one human issue as a core: sport glorifies differences, it demonises opponents, and erodes the moral character of its followers.

Harris and Klebolds Disciple Professor Ramos Blog
Harris and Klebolds Disciple Kevin Pech English 101 8 August 2018 Harris and Kleboldââ¬â¢s Disciples à à à à à à à à à à à What do Alvaro Castillo, Seung-Hui Cho, have in common? Other than committing or attempting to commit horrible atrocities not much connect the three. They did not know each other. Their motives for committing their crimes vary as do their mental states. But what they do have in common is that all three to some degree have been inspired by the Columbine High School massacre from 1999 and its two perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. In fact, many other mass murderers and attempting mass murderers have looked to past tragedies including the shooting at Columbine for inspiration and ideas to create their own crimes. Out of everything that has transpired by Columbineââ¬â¢s legacy the creation of copycat mass murderers has become one of the most serious outcomes. What made people obsessive over two monsters and what makes them monsters? This can be answered with Jeffrey Jerome Cohenââ¬â¢s Monster Culture (Seven Theses). According to Cohen there are seven theses that are traits that are associated with a monster but in the case of Harris and Klebold two of the theses connect to the creation of copycat shooters. The most influential is thesis six: ââ¬Å"Fear of the monster is really a kind of desireâ⬠and is strengthen by thesis two: ââ¬Å"the monster always escapesâ⬠. According to Cohen, ââ¬Å"The same creatures who terrify and interdict can evoke potent escapist fantasies; the linking of the monstrosity with the forbidden makes the monster all the more appealing as a temporary egress from constraint.â⬠(Cohen 16). Which means that a monster is desirable because it is allowed to commit acts that are considered taboo by society, when all of society is refrained from crossing that line into the taboo. The taboo that the Colu mbine shooters acted on was murder and that was accomplished with a school shooting that killed twelve students, a teacher, and wounding twenty-one others. The attack at the school was intended to be even worse than what transpired. According to an article by Slate Magazine, writer Dave Cullen stated, ââ¬Å"Harris and Klebold planned for a yearâ⬠¦The school served as means to a grander end, to terrorize the entire nation by attacking a symbol of American lifeâ⬠¦ They bragged about dwarfing the carnage of the Oklahoma City bombing and originally scheduled their bloody performance for its anniversary. Klebold boasted on video about inflicting ââ¬Ëthe most deaths in U.S. history.ââ¬â¢ Columbine was intended not primarily as a shooting at all, but as a bombing on a massive scale.â⬠(Cullen,à Slate) Society has taught us, ââ¬Å"thou shall not killâ⬠and even for those that are not religious, laws prevent people from crossing a line that should not be crossed. Harris and Klebold crossed that line and became monsters themselves. Despite the warnings there exist people that that have a desire the harm people, and they come to admire people like Harris and Klebold, they are viewed as symbols of freedom and power which encourages them to do the same. This also lead to thesis two. As Cohen explains, ââ¬Å"We see the damage the monster wreaks, the material remainsâ⬠¦but the monster itself turns immaterial and vanishes, to reappear someplace else.â⬠(Cohen 4). In this case the Columbine shooters left a path of destruction, but rather than turn themselves in to the authorities, they ââ¬Å"escapedâ⬠justice by committing suicide, and they ââ¬Å"reemergedâ⬠as copycat shooters. The following are just some the examples Harris and Klebold influence reached, these are their disciples. On August 30, 2006 Alvaro Castillo of Hillsborough, North Carolina killed his father, and ensued to Orange High School where he attempted a murder spree of the students but was stopped before he could do any more damage and only injured two students. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the man had a bizarre obsession with the Columbine shooting and its two perpetrators Harris and Klebold. The day of the Alvaroââ¬â¢s shooting attempt he was, ââ¬Å"dressed in a Colorado T-shirt, a black trench coatâ⬠¦ cargo pants, military-style boots and ammunition beltsHe armed himself with a sawed-off shotgun he named Arlene, the same name Columbine shooter Eric Harris gave his gunâ⬠(Karas). This demonstrates to what extent this individual went in order to emulate the Columbine shooters to the point he dressed and acquired the same weaponry as his idols. But it does not stop there, There was also a narrated video, that Castillo shot in Littleton after convincing his mothe r to take him there to see Columbine High School and the homes of shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (Karas). It is also important to point out that Castillo suffered from mental and suicidal issues an well as family problems. There were eight hours of video recordings of Castillo, ranting, yelling, whispering, singing and beating himself; journal entries detailing an obsession with a classmate he compared to the obsession would-be presidential assassin John Hinckley had with Jodie Foster; and a notebook he called Mass Murders and School Shootings of the 20th and 21st Centuries. In the notebook, he listed himself at the end of a gallery of school shooters (Karas). On April 20, 2006 prior to the shootings, Castillo attempted to commit suicide, dressed in his military uniform and was close to shooting himself with a shotgun, according toRafael Castillo [the father] wrestled the gun away and called the police on his son, who was committed to a psychiatric facility. (Karas) There ar e also claims that, Rafael Castillo tormented the family. He was described as a controlling husband and father with unconventional beliefs (Karas). All these problems culminated into creating an unstable person in Castillo, and probably related and found solace in the Harris and Klebold enough to grow an obsession and his mental stability amplified this. Castillo is not the only one that seem to have been influenced by Columbine. Seung-Hui Cho, the perpetrator behind the Virginia Tech shooting where he, slaughtered 32 studentsclaiming to have been inspired by the two teenagers who carried out the Columbine shootings, calling them martyrs in delusional diatribe he videotaped for the world (James). Cho was also reported to have mental problems as mentioned in an article by writer Dave Cullen forà Newsweekà stating, Cho was widely diagnosed as psychotic-the clinical term for a broad spectrum of deep mental illnesses including schizophrenia and paranoia. Psychotic killers are, most commonly, suffering from schizophrenia, a disease marked by delusions, hallucinations, and loss of emotion, speech, or motivation (Cullen Newsweek). The article further explained Chos thought process and motives, Do you know what it feels to be spit on your face and to have trash shoved down your throat? Cho railed in his manifesto before killing at Virginia Tech. You have vandalized my heart, raped my soul, and torched my conscience. You thought it was one pathetic boys life you were extinguishing. Thanks to you, I die like Jesus Christ, to inspire generations of the weak and defenseless people. Cho found a way to help everyone. He would be the hero of this tragedy. There was pleasure in planning such a grand demonstration of justice,' wrote Roger Depue, former chief of the FBIs Behavioral Sciences Unit, in the official report of the Virginia Tech Review Panel. His thought processes were so distorted that he began arguing to himself that his evil plan was actually doing good.' (Cullenà Newsweek) These are just two examples of people that influenced by Columbine and the list continues including people like Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza who possessedà hundreds of documents, images, videos pertaining to the Columbine H.S. massacre including what appears to be a complete copy of the investigation (Pearce). The amount of copycat shooters attempting to emulate what Harris and Klebold accomplished seem to increase as time progresses, some have been able to successfully surpass the body count of Columbine. If the the monsters goal was to to create a legacy of infamy and notoriety they certainly accomplished it. Annotated Bibliography Cohen, Jeffrey Jerome. Monster Culture (Seven Theses).
